New from Jonita Davis on The Black Cape: Interview: Hulu’s ‘Jacinta’ Star Jacinta Herself and Director Jessica Earnshaw Chat About Filming, Legalities, and More

The Hulu documentary Jacinta follows a young woman as she tries to restart her life after prison. She is also a recovering opioid addict. This is not the usual addiction drama. Director Jessica Earnshaw captures Jacinta through all of the phases of recovery and even relapse. Jacinta is high on camera, she does heroin on camera, and she even shoplifts while Jessica is filming. Jacinta and Jessica discuss this and more in an interview with Jo.

Jacinta is a biting look at the human side of the opioid epidemic and the toll it takes on a family. We also get a deep dive into Jacinta’s family to discover that her addiction roots began literally with her mother. In fact, Jessica says in the interview that she found Jacinta in the same prison where her mother was incarcerated. The mother and daughter’s relationship, along with the one Jacinta has with her own daughter are all another powerful part of the documentary and our interview.

Jacinta is often hard to watch but is very important to watch for people who need to understand what this epidemic is about. The documentary is peppered with statistics that will open eyes and inform audiences. Jacinta talks about why she shared so much with the world. Part of it was to help. But, she may have ended up helping herself in the meantime.

Jacinta streams on Hulu now.
