New from Jonita Davis on The Black Cape: An ‘Eternals’ Trailer Reaction and a Few Discoveries

Eternals dropped their trailer this week and I just had to react.

And you all know how much I detest making trailer reactions…

However, this trailer required a reaction. It is for a film directed by Chloe Zao, Oscar-winning director of the Oscar-winning film Nomadland. Zao really proved that she can create a memorable and beautiful film. She has already won over critics. No, can she win over comic fans? Here’s my reaction to the first trailer.

My vote is “yes”.

The trailer is spectacular. Zao’s ability to bring the beauty out of the landscape, and her composition of group scenes, and the color–even the variation in body tones–was there. Angelina Jolie, Brian Tyree Henry, Kumail Nanjiani, Kit Harrington, Millie Bobby Brown, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Ma Dong-seok, and many others grace the screen. Eternals will be the most diverse superhero cast in Marvel history…

But there is still not a prominent Latina or Black woman character… Laura Ridloff is AfroLatina and carrying the torch for us all in this one. I hope Chloe Zao gives Ridloff some great scenes and all the flowers for her work.

But, this is still a great start. I know have to read the comics to see what exactly I was seeing in this trailer. I may need to re-evaluate this trailer after a read.

Also, I mistook Richard Madden for Sebastian Stan. My bad.

Eternals comes to theaters on November 5, 2021.
