This week, Disney Plus dropped a new seemingly sports-centered film based on a real Black man’s story–Safety. So many of us go some pretty bad Blindside flashbacks. The Sandra Bullock film is fun and wholesome, but it perpetuates that long-held notion that black boys from the hood, especially the dark-skinned ones, are incapable of making anything of themselves without a white person to save them.
Safety redefines sports movies to get rid of this trope. They are now focused on the player and his life off the field. Here’s more about the story and my review of the film.
Safety is streaming now on Disney +.
