New from Jonita Davis on The Black Cape: ‘Bad Hair’ Debuts on Hulu Just in Time for Halloween

Bad Hair arrives on Hulu on October 23, just in time for Halloween. The Black Cape had an opportunity to sit down with the cast and preview the film. Scroll on down to see our chats and our official review of the film.

Laverne Cox plays Virgie a (mystical) hairdresser who can do a really “killer” weave. We discussed her character and how Black hair is a pop culture icon even though Black people are still restricted from wearing it as they wish.

Elle Lorraine plays the star, Ann, and Lena Waithe plays her best friend Brook-Lynne. We discussed their friendship and how Justin Simien created a narrative where Black women and their friendships could shine. I also wanted to ask Lena how it felt to be JUST the actress on a project instead of the multihyphenate positions she usually has on a film. We ran out of time, though.

My last interview was with Blair Underwood who plays Amos Bludso, the patriarch of Ann’s family. We discussed the timeliness of Bad Hair and how it’s a perfect time for black stories. My Auntie gave me a lot of other questions for Mr. Underwood. Thankfully, I ran out of time and couldn’t ask them.

Our official review does give the lowdown on the film and all the things you’ve heard. It is a bit campy but the narrative is relatable and relevant to Black women especially. Give it a watch.

Review: ‘Bad Hair’ is a Horrifyingly Good Metaphor for the Black Hair Struggle
