Hirokazu Koreeda won the Palme d’Or for Shoplifters and that film captured the equal beauty and complications of what a family means. My hope one day, is that Koreeda’s works are gathered into a box set, and it would accurately be titled- Family. That theme runs deep, in all forms, through all of his pictures, and that includes his recent work- The Truth. It’s the director’s first venture into cinema with English and French speaking characters, but the themes still stay the same- the dynamics of a family is difficult and the little lies we tell ourselves can cause a ripple effect. With an iconic cast- Juliette Binoche, Catherine Deneuve, and Ethan Hawke- with meta themes about acting, the legacy we leave behind; The Truth captures the highs and the lows of the family surrounding us, in a beautiful portrait of life.
