New from Reel Talker by Jim Alexander: Movie Review: Ralph Breaks The Internet

Disney struck gold with Wreck it Ralph and they manage to nearly do it again with Ralph Breaks The Internet. This sequel brings back all the beloved familiar characters, Ralph, Vanellope, Felix, Calhoun and introduces new ones along the way. Although familiar in many ways, it’s very much its own movie.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

The plot takes place roughly six years after the events of Wreck-It Ralph. The Sugar Rush arcade machine breaks down, so in order to save it, Ralph and Vanellope travel to the great unknown, the internet. They are transported via a new Wi-Fi router installed at Litwak’s.

What adds to the intrigue is that the new surroundings becomes a divide between Ralph and Vanellope. The best friends are faced with tough tasks and decisions that separates them and tests their friendship. This chance in dynamic adds another element of surprise and questions. Whose side are you going to choose? Team Ralph or Team Vanellope?

HOW DID THE ACTORS DO:

The returning voice performers John C. Reilly (Ralph), Sarah Silverman (Vanellope) are just as sharp and witty and they were the first time around. Taraji P. Henson (Yesss) and Gal Gadot (Shank) are the new additions to the cast. Familiarity is just what’s needed for this franchise to maintain its success, which is exactly what these actors do. No need to change something that’s already working.

HOW DOES THE MOVIE LOOK AND SOUND:

While Ralph attempts to figure out the internet, you can’t help but marvel at how visually appetizing the on-screen images are. You couldn’t have imagined the inside of the internet to look any more colorful and overwhelmingly fantastic.

Can’t beat this music, classic soundtracks layered throughout the film, including Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” and “Zero” by Imagine Dragons. With performers and songs like that, you can’t help but be satisfied. Disney knows how to make the sounds effects pop and incorporate memorable music to the movie.

WAS IT ENTERTAINING:

Ralph Breaks The Internet is a lot of fun. It’s not only for kids and families, although they will certainly enjoy it. One thing they could have improved on is giving more screen time to the other returning characters, who seemed to have been bundled up together back in the broken arcade.

There are several easter eggs planted throughout. Lots of familiar Disney characters make cameos, but the best part of the movie might be when Vanellope meets the Disney Princesses. You’ll see why.

The clever one-liners are there. The humor associated with the previous film is also present. Most importantly it has an entertaining plot that takes you deep into the internet world and all of its glory.

SHOULD YOU CHECK IT OUT:

If you’re a Disney fan and a fan of Wreck-It Ralph, then this is an immediate must-see. Others, who are new to the Wreck-It Ralph franchise should give this a look also. You don’t necessarily have had to seen the first movie in order to watch this, but it’s recommended in order to familiarize with the characters and backstory.

If the charming characters weren’t a selling point already, the visuals put it over the top. It has an ingenious plot that expands your imagination of the inner workings of the internet. That alone is a must-see. The creativity is top-notch.
