New from Solzy at the Movies by Danielle Solzman: 2019 Oscars Nominations: The Snubs

Among the early snubs for this year’s Oscars nominations are La La Land composer Justin Hurwitz.  This nomination comes as First Man is now available to bring home on home media.

Also missing from Best Original Score is Marco Beltrami for his score in A Quiet Place.  Given the lack of sound in the film, the score is among the most important aspects.

With regards to Best Editing, Tom Cross misses out on a nomination for First Man.

Burning missed out on Best Foreign Language Film.

Won’t You Be My Neighbor? misses out on Best Documentary Feature!  This was a stacked category but both RBG and Won’t You Be My Neighbor? have been locks since Sundance.

Ethan Hawke completely misses out on Best Actor for First Reformed.  Instead, Willem Dafoe gets in for At Eternity’s Gate.

Sorry but I have to say it: Mary Elizabeth Winstead was completely snubbed for All About Nina.  If a perfect world, she would have been in the conversation for her performance in Eva Vives’ timely and relevant film.

Perhaps the most surprising thing this morning is that Peter Farrelly completely misses out on a Best Directing nomination for Green Book.  This comes after he was recognized by the DGA Awards with a nomination the other day.  Bradley Cooper also misses out for A Star is Born in this category.  He’s been a lock since the film’s premiere in Venice.  Given that The Academy differed with the DGA Awards, it would have been nice to see a woman nominated for Best Director this morning but alas, we can’t have nice things.  It is considerably harder for any film to take home a film without a nomination for Best Director.

As far as Best Picture, we only have 8 nominations.  Among these films, only four of the films saw directing nominations.  We’ve seen stranger things happen before but who knows what will happen.

The 91st Oscar ceremony will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network.
