New from Kevin Wozniak on Kevflix: 2019 Golden Globes – Who Will/Should Win

The 76th annual Golden Globes are happening tonight.  The Globes are a very hit and miss show in terms of how they affect the Oscar race.  On the one hand, it gives us a slight idea of how these voting branches are leaning for voting.  On the other hand, Alice in Wonderland was nominated for Best Picture in 2010, so you get both sides of the coin.  With this year’s Oscar race still relatively open, I hope this will clear the fog just a little bit.  Here are my picks for who will win, as well as should win, at this year’s Golden Globes.

Best Screenplay – Motion Picture

  • Roma
  • The Favourite
  • If Beale Street Could Talk
  • Vice
  • Green Book

The Favourite has a ton of wit, drama, comedy, and smart dialog that everyone in the HFPA will fall in love with.

  • Will Win – THE FAVOURITE
  • Should Win – IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK

Best Original Score – Motion Picture

  • A Quiet Place
  • Isle of Dogs
  • Black Panther
  • First Man
  • Mary Poppins Returns

A lot of great scores here, particularly First Man, but Mary Poppins is the only musical of the bunch, so it should take this one.

  • Will Win – MARY POPPINS RETURNS
  • Should Win – First Man

Best Original Song – Motion Picture

  • “All The Stars,” Black Panther
  • “Girl in the Movies,” Dumpling
  • “Requiem for a Private War,” A Private War
  • “Revelation,” Boy Erased
  • “Shallow,” A Star is Born

I’m predicting A Star is Born sweep and “Shallow” is the biggest song from any movie this year, even if it may not be the best.

  • Will Win  – “SHALLOW”, A STAR IS BORN
  • Should Win – “All the Stars”, Black Panther

Best Foreign Language Film

  • Capernaum
  • Girl
  • Never Look Away
  • Roma
  • Shoplifters

A cakewalk here.  Roma is the only film to have nominations in other categories and has been a critical favorite all season long.

  • Will Win – ROMA
  • Should Win – Shoplifters

Best Motion Picture, Animated

  • Incredibles 2
  • Isle of Dogs
  • Mirai
  • Ralph Breaks the Internet
  • Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse

This is a tougher battle than I anticipated it being, as INCREDIBLES 2, SPIDERVERSE, and ISLE OF DOGS all could pull a W here.  But the Globes LOVE Pixar (they nominated CARS 2 for God’s sake) so I think INCREDIBLES 2 will pull this off.

  • Will Win – INCREDIBLES 2
  • Should Win – Incredibles 2

Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture

  • Amy Adams, Vice
  • Claire Foy, First Man
  • Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk
  • Emma Stone, The Favourite
  • Rachel Weisz, The Favourite

Vice has the most nominations out of every movie at this year’s Globes, so I expect they will reward it in a number of spots.  Adams is a favorite in the industry and could pull a double win for this and SHARP OBJECTS.  Don’t be surprised if King pulls an upset, though.

  • Will win – AMY ADAMS, VICE
  • Should Win – Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk

Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture

  • Mahershala Ali, Green Book
  • Timothée Chalamet, Beautiful Boy
  • Adam Driver, BlacKkKlansman
  • Richard E. Grant, Can You Ever Forgive Me?
  • Sam Rockwell, Vice

The most unpredictable category at the Globes and in Oscar season, anyone could pull this one out.  Green Book got a good number of nominations and Ali is the standout – and only good part – of the film, so I’m leaning his way.  He was also criminally robbed back in 2016 for his Oscar winning turn in Moonlight, so they owe him one.  I could also see the charming Richard E. Grant pull out a win here or even Driver, which would make me ecstatic.

  • Will Win – MAHERSHALA ALI, GREEN BOOK
  • Should Win – Adam Driver, BlackKklansman

Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy

  • Lin Manuel Miranda, Mary Poppins Returns
  • Christian Bale, Vice
  • Viggo Mortenson, Green Book
  • Robert Redford, The Old Man and the Gun
  • John C Reilly, Stan And Ollie

A great list of nominees – except for Mortinson, who’s one “spicy meat-a-ball away from Chef Boyardee – but Bale has this one in the bag for a performance that could nab him his second Oscar.

  • Will Win – CHRISTIAN BALE, VICE
  • Should Win – Robert Redford, The Old Man and the Gun

Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy

  • Olivia Colman, The Favourite
  • Emily Blunt, Mary Poppins Returns
  • Charlize Theron, Tully
  • Elsie Fisher, Eighth Grade
  • Constance Wu, Crazy Rich Asians

It’s really a coin-flip between Blunt and the deliriously fun Colman, but I think Blunt will be rewarded for her sensational year and for a performance you can’t help but love.  I would also like to note that my heart would explode if Fisher somehow won.

  • Will Win – EMILY BLUNT, MARY POPPINS RETURNS
  • Should Win – Emily Blunt, Mary Poppins Returns

Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama

  • Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born
  • Willem Dafoe, At Eternity’s Gate
  • Lucas Hedges, Boy Erased
  • Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody
  • John David Washington, BlacKkKlansman

Along with a possible A Star is Born sweep, Cooper’s been nominated twice before with no wins and A Star is Born is the best performance of his career.  I don’t think any of the other nominees have a shot, though if there were one, it would probably be *shudder* Rami Malek.

  • Will Win – BRADLEY COOPER, A STAR IS BORN
  • Should Win – Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born

Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama

  • Glenn Close, The Wife
  • Lady Gaga, A Star Is Born
  • Nicole Kidman, Destroyer
  • Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me?
  • Rosamund Pike, A Private War

They’ve awarded Gaga before in 2016 for American Horror Story, and will do so once again, as this will be the first stop on Gaga’s run to the Oscar.

  • Will Win – LADY GAGA, A STAR IS BORN
  • Should Win – Lady Gaga, A Star is Born

Best Director – Motion Picture

  • Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born
  • Alfonso Cuaron, Roma
  • Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman
  • Adam McKay, Vice
  • Peter Farrelly, Green Book

The sweep continues, so I’m leaning on Cooper, though Cuaron, who’s more than likely to win the Oscar, could easily pull this off.  I also wouldn’t be surprised is Spike Lee came from behind to pull this out, a win that would make my heart sing.

  • Will Win – BRADLEY COOPER, A STAR IS BORN
  • Should Win – Spike Lee, BlackKklansman

Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy

  • The Favourite
  • Green Book
  • Vice
  • Mary Poppins Returns
  • Crazy Rich Asians

The only one you can count out is Crazy Rich Asians, though that movie is great.  Will it go to the feel-good movie about race?  The most nominated movie?  A dazzling musical?  Or a love triangle period dramedy?  I’m leaning towards the love triangle, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the HFPA went for something more conventional.

  • Will Win – THE FAVOURITE
  • Should Win – Mary Poppins Returns

Best Motion Picture, Drama

  • BlacKkKlansman
  • If Beale Street Could Talk
  • Black Panther
  • A Star Is Born
  • Bohemian Rhapsody

The sweep is completed with A Star is Born taking home the big prize, though this is far from a guarantee, as BlackKklansman could pull off the upset, as could the juggernaut that is Black Panther.

  • Will Win – A STAR IS BORN
  • Should Win – A Star is Born
