New from Solzy at the Movies by Danielle Solzman: Tribeca 2018: The Miseducation of Cameron Post

The Miseducation of Cameron Post shines a light into the world of conversion therapy.

To most people, Cameron Post (Chloë Grace Moretz) is a normal girl in high school.  However, on prom night, her boyfriend, Jamie, discovers her making out in his car with Coley Taylor (Quinn Shephard).  Next thing she knows, it’s off to G-d’s Promise to help her with her sins.  The place is run by Dr. Lydia Marsh (Jennifer Ehle) and Reverend Rick (John Gallagher Jr.) is said to be cured of his struggles and now in a healthy relationship with his girlfriend.  While on the premises, Cameron is quick to befriend two-spirt Adam Red Eagle (Forrest Goodluck) and Jane Fonda (Sasha Lane).

Anyone who comes from the LGBTQ community ought to be familiar with the concept of conversion therapy.  It’s where people are sent to “fix” their “struggles” with same-sex attraction.  The thing is, these things NEVER WORK and lead to more psychological issues than anything else.  LGBTQ Members of the Orthodox Jewish community are all too familiar with JONAH (Jews Offering New Alternatives for Healing, formerly Jews Offering New Alternatives for Homosexuality).

I’ll say this for now as my full review will run in August upon release–there’s a scene in a bookstore with a book titled Cults is very noticeable.  Given the vibe of the center, having the book stand out is so perfect for this film.
