The 2017 nominations were announced earlier this morning for the British Academy Film Awards to be presented in 2018. Best known as the BAFTA Awards, there were some surprises and snubs as the nominations were announced.
Mudbound and The Post were completely shut out. The snub of Mudbound, one of the most essential films to be released in 2017, is a result of the film being distributed by Netflix. If the film had any other distributor, it would be a sure-fire awards contender. There’s no excuse for director Dee Rees, cinematographer Rachel Morrison, and supporting actress Mary J. Blige to not be a part of the conversation. While it’s one thing to not nominate a film because of not having enough slots, there’s no reason to snub such an important film because of the distributor.
