The films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe too often suffer from the same narrative issue that has been plaguing comic books since their inception: their episodic nature makes them feel like they are simply being used as connective tissue between past and future installments, whether or not they can stand on their own merit. So when Marvel released Guardians Of The Galaxy in 2014, this virtually unknown property sent us all reeling when it was actually able to be taken at face value, rather than as an advertisement for the rest of the franchise. With Vol. 2, James Gunn and co. manage to build upon the zany energy of the first film without awkwardly forcing itself into the MCU.
