The Chicago Independent Film Critics Circle (CIFCC) held its first Showcase of Films on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5-6. Their opening night film, “Resilience,” by James Redford premiered at the Siskel Film Center. On Sunday, the Showcase continued at the Wilmette Theatre with the Ecuadorian thriller “Thirst” followed by Kevin B. Lee’s curated presentation of video essays from around the world. At all three screenings, filmmakers were on hand to discuss their creations.
It was Lee’s final video essay from CIFCC member Nelson Carvajal entitled “Wake Up: Spike Lee’s Vital “Chi-Raq” that is making quite a stir right now. Kevin Willmott, co-writer of “Chi-Raq” had this to say about Carvajal’s essay: “I have been saying those same things for months…He nailed it!”
