Sometimes a good lead can salvage a so-so horror movie. An audience must feel empathy for the protagonist character in a thriller or horror film for it to truly succeed. The right actor or actress cast in the part brings a lot to such necessities. If they don’t, the character might as well just be another corpse on screen. Failure to care about what’s happening to horror’s victims on film ultimately derailed franchises like “Friday the 13th” and “Saw.” But because movie star Blake Lively gives such a committed performance in “The Shallows”, the attention-getting frightener opening today, we stay involved with her character throughout. Even when the movie around her is not particularly good, as it often isn’t.
